HOST, THE MAPLE DRAGON PODCAST

Mark Robson was a university professor in Toronto, Canada with a deep fascination for the environment and birdwatching.

But when life’s unexpected twists took him across oceans to China in 2012, Mark found himself immersed in a culture of profound depth and wisdom. This personal journey of healing and finding himself again turned into an intimate, soul-stirring journey into the heart of China.

Mark Robson returned to China in 2023, this time to help build connections between a culture of profound wisdom and the Western world.

My Inspirations

Influenced by Xuanzang

From ancient China comes the story of Xuanzang, a Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveler, and translator who lived during the Tang dynasty, from 602 to 664 AD. Such is the weight of tradition that Journey to the West, one of China’s four great classic novels, immortalises Xuanzang’s epic 16-year, 25,000-kilometre journey through 110 countries.

Xuanzang was no ordinary traveller.

H was once described as a “member of one culture who had lovingly and totally immersed himself in another.” And he didn’t travel for personal accolades. He did because of his wish to have “the sublime truth may also be known in the eastern country to enlighten another civilization” (qtd. In Yung-his Li 28).

His journey was a search for truth to clarify the distorted Chinese translations of Buddhists texts. And to do that, he traveled westwards to learn from Indian masters the sacred texts’ true meaning. When he got home, he introduced new texts and doctrines to the Chinese clergy and carried Buddhist paraphernalia for the performance of rituals and ceremonies.

But it was his remarkable insights into cross-cultural perceptions and interactions that put him above the rest.

Cultural Immersion

Xuanzang’s Wisdom

At the time, the Chinese viewed foreign people as uncivilized and barbaric. Xuanzang pained a contrasting picture. He brought details about India’s social structure, educational requirements, legal and economic practices, social and cultural norms and eating habits. He was so influential, in fact, he contributed to an altogether new public outlook on India as a mystical land inhabited by “civilized” and sophisticated people.

When I first read about Xuanzang I instantly identified with him and he became my adventure travel hero.

As a Westerner, the notion of foreign peoples as uncivilized and even barbaric is something I grew up with. Prior to living in China, I’d not heard much of anything positive in the Western media, either.

But much like Xuanzang, as I immersed myself in a culture and people so different, I fell in love… Admittedly, with my Western suspicion, it took time but, as the years flew by, I could no longer believe that my exceptional treatment wasn’t genuine.

Whether I was given the “thumbs up” and, even esteemed by the Chinese after I identified myself as a teacher. Or when I’d go anywhere as a foreigner and being treated as an honoured guest. Or even the overwhelming kindness everywhere I went. Everything compelled me to contemplate that I might be immersed in a culture even more civilized and sophisticated than mine…

So, in the spirit of not forgetting about those not yet enlightened, my purpose is to spread this knowledge even if it’s on my own dime.
